This week's episode welcomes back the team, including SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Kryskow, Dr. Bauman, and Dr. Carl "Big Face Carl (BFC)" Hanson. We have been away for almost a MONTH (!!!), so we are back in style with lots to discuss! Some of the team recently attended CAMIT (Curso Avanzado de Mínima Invasion Toracica) in Mexico City. Submissions for CWISummit 2025 also recently closed and we broke the record for the number! Finally, it is that time of year again...Movember...when we grow those beautiful upper lip caterpillars for men's health, and the FractureLine team doesn't disappoint!!

This week's episode welcomes Drs. Jeffry Nahmias, MD & Sebastian Schubl, MD FACS (Trauma & Critical Care Surgery, University of California Irvine [UCI]). Dr. Nahmias is the director of the SICU for UCI & Dr. Schubl is the director of medical operations for UCI and a CWIS Stalwart. These two have been working on and recently published their article in Injury (9/23/24), "Effects of post rib plating tube thoracostomy output on the need for thoracic re-intervention: Does the volume matter?" This article is an excellent resource for the ever-present question: is there a magic number for chest tube output before it is pulled that helps prevent the need for replacement or re-intervention?! The answer may very well surprise you! We were joined by SarahAnn Whitbeck, Dr. White, Dr. Kryskow, & Dr. Bauman joined us.

These two have been working on and recently published their article in JTACS (8/22/24) "Contemporary management of patients with multiple rib fractures: What you need to know." This article is the next in line as part of the JTACS series on foundational topics that every surgeon (chest wall enthusiastic or otherwise) should know! This week's episode welcomes Drs. Everett Eriksson, MD (Department of Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina) [CWIS Stalwart] & Dr. Matthew Sherrier, MD (Department of Orthopaedics and Physical Medicine, Medical University of South Carolina). These two have been working on an interesting injury line as a result of rib fractures: the possibility that denervation of abdominal musculature after intercostal nerve injury can lead to atrophy or pain and perhaps even hernia occurrence. This work has been published in their article "Intercostal nerve electrodiagnostic testing in rib fractures," in Muscle & Nerve. As always, SarahAnn, Dr. White, Dr. Bauman & Dr. Kryskow joined us.

He is interested in trauma surgery and met the CWIS team in Portugal for the ECTES meeting just a few months ago. He is also a former professional rower in Estonia with an impressive 2K time! We were also joined by SarahAnn, Dr. White, and Dr. Bauman. Finally, we get some weekly updates and a reminder that CWIS International is right around the corner!

We got to talk with them about their new article published in the Current Pain & Headache Reports: "A Narrative Review of Ultrasound-Guided and Landmark-based Percutaneous Cryoneurolysis for the Management of Acute and Chronic Pain." We were also joined by SarahAnn, Dr. White, Dr. Bauman, and Dr. Kryskow. Finally, we get some weekly updates and a reminder that CWIS International is right around the corner!

We get to hear from them about their new articles published in the European Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery: "Return to work and activity after rib-fixation for acute chest trauma: first application of a validated patient-reported outcomes assessment tool." We also had a special guest and CWIS giant Dr. Joe Forrester introduce a new project that looks to reduce the number of costal margin fractures in trauma patients (Please message SarahAnn or Dr. Forrester ASAP if you are interested in getting involved!).
