Finding The Right Rib Patient w/ Dr. Mathieu Hylands

This week, FractureLine met with Dr. Mathieu Hylands (Université de Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada)! Dr. Hylands describes himself as a "newly minted" Trauma/Surgical Critical Care physician who encountered many questions as he was learning about rib fixation. This curiosity and investigation have led to the paper recently published in the Journal of Trauma. There is an abundance of questions asked and lots to think about with all the brainpower and critical thinking that fills this episode!

This week, the FractureLine Friends met with Dr. Husayn Ladhani (CU Department of Surgery, Denver Health)! Dr. Ladhani is a recent graduate/survivor of his fellowship with Dr. Pieracci, who will be taking his skills to Loma Linda for his academic career. Dr. Ladhani is also the presentation winner of CWISummit 2022 and discusses his winning research, which has recently been officially published. He is a very modest physician and a rising star for CWIS!

This week, the FractureLine Team dives headfirst into the discussion of Length Of Stay (LOS) as a metric for success in rib fixation. Opinions are mixed about the details but **(SPOILER ALERT)** the overarching idea is that LOS stinks and muddies the water in measuring true outcomes in rib trauma. What should take its' place? Is there a limited role for LOS in some capacity?! We get our guest's opinion as well, a familiar voice and Angry Viking, Dr. Everet Eriksson!

Going forward we will be adding a section to discuss a clinical case(s) of the week, with the goal to add some education back into the pod. Dr. Brewer is also the 2024 Winner of EAST's Essay Contest, making her the recipient of the Oriens Award! Next year she will be taking her skills to New Orleans at LSU with Dr. Greiffenstein!!

Dr. Doben has led us through the 2023 year and now into 2024, and we get an inside look at his reflections on the year and hopes for us going forward! FL Introduces Dr. Crystal Zhang, MD, MPH

This week, the FractureLine Team met with Dr. Crystal Zhang, MD, MPH (PGY-5 at Ascension St. Vincent and rising CWIS star). Dr. Zhang has jumped into CWIS membership with attendance at CWIS International and a presentation there, and now will be attending CWISummit 2024 with more to teach us! We also get some updates about the Summit and hear about where members can find us next until that time!
